Culture comprises all human factors including religious matters, social organizations, and economic issues. The culture is founded on ascribed meanings shared by society and forms its fashion of life. Culture defines individuals and plays a significant role in the manner in which they behave, feel, reason, communicate, and listen. Cultural diversity between teachers and students influences their interaction and sometimes presents difficulties to the learners and the teachers. The paper looks at the intersection of education, communication and culture.
The existence of the ranked structure of the society has been widely accepted. This phenomenon strengthens cultural oppression therefore; students from the dominant cultures tend to outperform those from the subordinate cultures and stay at the top of the rank as their counterparts underachieve. The bicultural students are hence forced to learn how to compete for the few positions at the top instead of improving their status. For instance, Dader claims that “..the object of education is the free, enterprising, independent individuals, and that students should be educated to adapt to the existing configurations of power that make up the dominant society.” He further says that “ a prominent value that supports different forms of cultural oppressions (i.e., classism, racism, and sexism) and that is widely reinforced by a conservational discourse is that of the existing hierarchical structures of the society”. Communication skills are considered significant ingredients for high academic performance achievements. That explains why bicultural students underperform since they developed in culturally underprivileged settings. For instance, Darder says that “bicultural children grow up in intellectually and verbally barren, “culturally deprived” homes, where they fail to receive enough stimulation from their parents to develop cognitive skills necessary to succeed in schools and adulthood.”
Individuals from different cultural backgrounds differ significantly in the manner in which they view means of communication and forms that are deemed pertinent in some circumstances and settings. For instance, students from Hong Kong may consider sex in a perspective that is offensive to the American school rules and regulations, and therefore, stand a higher chance of regular punishment than their host counterparts. Americans are upfront in their style of communication as viewed by the Chinese. The conduct causes a lot of uneasiness to the Asians and sometimes hurts their feelings. While the Americans tend to defend their ideas, confront or debate to pass them across, the Chinese consider such behaviors humiliating. They don’t engage people and sometimes may just nod in agreement even if they have a different opinion. Such differences in the classroom may be a source of differences and misunderstandings that may lead to some sections of the students being under punishment more often than not. In Chinese culture, it is not easy to access higher education. There is very competitive admission into the university and just a small percentage of the Chinese make it. In this regard, high education levels symbolized by degrees and masters are viewed as symbols of honor that guarantee a comfortable position upon completion. The technological culture indoctrinated into the Chinese makes Science and technology the most revered educational attainment. They symbolize accomplishment and a decent life.
The experience of education has enabled me to appreciate the role education attainment plays in shaping the lives of individuals. It has also enlightened me to recognize the importance of understanding the cultural differences that define the way students behave in different conditions. My education experience until today has made me a respectable observer with detective skills to discern variations in symbols, rites, and heroes between other cultures and mine since the features are replicated in practices.
In conclusion, culture, communication, and education are three aspects that are interlinked. The classroom represents a communication medium between students and teachers. When the two groups come from different cultural backgrounds, they meet a myriad of issues from different behaviors, attitudes, and feelings. A balance must exist, however, if they are allowed to go to the extreme, misunderstandings are bound to arise and cause conflicts.
