Biofilms are communities of microorganisms attached to surfaces and embedded in extracellular polymers that provide protection, stability and nutrition to the various bacterial species that inhabit them. Biofilms are complex three-dimensional microbial communities that grow on interfaces and interact with their surroundings. Biofilms have great potential as a renewable adjunct in waste, soil and water remediation applications by sequestering and transforming potentially toxic compounds.
