So you think you might want to get a ferret
Well, here's a quick tour through the ups and downs of ferret ownership.
First of all, do not believe anyone who says that ferrets are low maintainence. Ferrets need a lot of love and attention. These are not large rodents who will stay content caged up all day. You've got to have the time each day to let your fuzzies out to play and explore (trust us, they can get bored very quickly).
Second, do not believe anyone who says that ferrets are inexpensive to own and don't require much medical attention. Having ferrets can be very much like having toddlers in the house (they try to get into everything and will attempt to eat anything that will fit in their mouths, which can cause some serious problems). Ferret care doesn't always have to be expensive, but the little guys often run into medical problems (see the FAQ for more informantion on common medical problems in ferrets). Expect to spend at least $100-$200 a year in medical expenses per ferret (this is a rough estimate and should not be taken as a guarentee, the total medical costs per year could easily be higher or lower for you).
Third, ferret ownership has often been described as addictive. Most people who chose to have ferrets in their home end up falling prey to "Ferret Math", where the ferret hypnotizes their human into getting more ferrets (Trust me, this is no joke. We started with a single ferret and in about 6 months we ended up with 5 fuzzies taking over our house).
