Fellow at the National Association of Scholars John Sailer shared an explanation on Twitter about how Texas is an excellent illustration of a Republican-run "red state" with universities full of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) bureaucracies that change the purpose of higher education.
According to the findings of a research paper, DEI requirements for hiring are very common, and diversity-related initiatives and management could be detrimental to the stated objectives.
Sailer posted on Twitter, "The rapid, all-consuming growth of DEI is not limited to universities in progressive states."Many "red state" universities are creating bureaucracies that undermine the fundamental purpose of higher education and engender scholar activism. The most obvious illustration:Texas.”
According to the National Association of Scholars website, Sailer joined the Keeping the Republic Project in 2021. This project is part of a larger effort to "preserve traditional civics education against the threat of New Civics, which replaces civics education with vocational training for progressive activism."The Civics Alliance, which is comprised of "education reformers, policymakers, and concerned citizens," is also supported by Keeping the Republic. The Anatomy of a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Takeover and "Educating for Citizenship:" two of Sailer's most recent works, respectively. The Case of Texas."
The University of Texas at Austin, according to Sailer's Twitter thread, is a prime example of "DEI bureaucracies" flourishing. In response to student demands that began in June 2016, UT Austin produced a seven-page DEI document in 2017.“basically declare Kendian anti-racism to be an integral feature of the job,” according to Sailer, the NADOHE (National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education) says.According to Sailer, there is no reason to believe that UT Austin students will not embrace "Kendism."
Additionally, tenure and promotion requirements now include a DEI component for faculty positions, according to Sailer. He contends that the "DEI bureaucracy" will "invariably drift toward political activism."He also discusses DEI at Texas A&M University, where he claims that the school has "wholeheartedly embraced DEI" by establishing a "climate committee" for each academic department and hiring an associate dean for inclusive excellence.
There is a Diversity and Inclusion Council at Texas A&M's dentistry school and an Equity and Social Justice Collective at the education school.According to Sailer, these DEI initiatives have "downstream effects on teaching and scholarship," but they also have a more significant underlying effect:an ideological echo chamber mandated by the institution."Sailer provides additional evidence that Texas public universities have "embraced" diversity in education (DEI) by requiring diversity statements from faculty candidates.
