What is total knee replacement surgery?
Knee replacement surgery, also known as knee arthroplasty, is a process in which the diseased knee is improved by cutting away the damaged bone and cartilage and replacing them with an artificial joint made of alloys.

You may ask, why is it important to undergo knee replacement surgery? Most commonly, severe pain, osteoarthritis or knee injuries cause uneasiness in a person to such an extent that performing daily tasks like walking, using the restroom, climbing stairs, going to the office or visiting friends and relatives becomes impossible.

In order to restore your mobility in such cases, the only option that remains is surgery.

It is better to opt for surgery than to live in pain.

Recovery duration
The most common query among people is regarding the duration of recovery from surgery.

Usually, it takes around 4-6 weeks to heal. The surgery takes around 1-2 hours, and once the surgery is done, the patient will be able to stand after 24 hours and be independent to use the restroom on their own.

It is important for the patient to stay in the hospital for 4-5 days post-surgery. After that, the patient can go home with the help of the walker.

After a further 10 days, the patient is free to remove the walker and use a stick for walking. After 14 days, the patient can stop using the stick and walk on their own without any support.

In 20 days, the patient can get back to his/her normal life and start performing basic activities like climbing stairs and going for a short walk.

Within 4-6 weeks, the patient can start driving and go back to the usual life; go to the office; visit the temple; visit friends and relatives etc.

Once the patient is completely healed, they can lead a normal life and perform all kinds of activities: cycling, swimming, brisk walking for 2-3 hours, climbing up to the 10th floor, and so on.

Precautions
The patient can go back to their normal life in a certain period of time. However, they must take some precautions for faster recovery and proper healing.

The patient can sit on a chair after 24 hours, but they can sit on the floor only after 3 months.
Do not overschedule activities.
Don’t climb stairs higher than the 10th floor.
Don’t walk continuously for more than 2-3 hours.
Don’t engage in severe physical activities like playing football or running.
